2 April: Chaingang evening rides recommence on Thursdays
The chain gang is a great way to increase fitness, and since it's a fixed route, there is no risk of getting lost if you drop. The idea behind a chain gang or paceline is that the lead rider only spends a short amount of time on the front (and in the wind); they then peel off and allow the rider behind to take the front, which is repeated with each rider taking a turn on the front. The name comes from the fact that the riders appear to be rotating, looking like a chain. Thursday evenings - details and sign up on SPOND.

The Velo Year…
Newbury Velo is a vibrant and multifaceted cycling club. We maintain a year-round schedule of activities in addition to our weekend and mid-week group rides. At the competitive level, we organise regular time trials throughout the season, host a cyclocross events a part of the Wessex CX series, as well as a summer cyclocross season. We coordinate a club triathlon race series, and even have a signature event - the Newbury Triathlon, which will celebrate its 38th year in 2025.
The Club puts strong emphasis on inclusivity and development, offering dedicated women's training programs (including a "Ride the Night" series), youth coaching sessions, and a tandem cycling project that enables visually impaired riders to participate. Our ride offerings cater to various abilities, from relaxed "Cortado" social rides at 11-13mph to more challenging chain gang sessions.
Social connection is important to the Club, with monthly social gatherings, an annual awards evening, and a summer BBQ. Our members organise ambitious group tours, including trips to Majorca, the Isle of Wight, and Abergavenny. The Club also maintains a strong community presence, helping with local events like the Newbury 10K and participating in the Newbury Festival of Cycling.
We run regular kit shop windows throughout the year and organise special "Steelie" rides for vintage steel bike enthusiasts, who get a special vintage inspired kit.
Explore our calendar, we are sure we have something for all cyclists and triathletes.
